A Brief History of Time

February 27th, 2009 by admin

geekclockAre you a science geek or a math geek? Both? Hmm…Impossible!

I’ve always been fascinated with numbers and the many ways they can be manipulated.  My fascination, however, is limited by the fact that I am basically incompetent when it comes to math.

When I was in high school, I found a watch that I fell in love with.  It had Goofy on the face and his arms told the time.  Backwards.  BACKWARDS!!!  When I got that watch, I thought I was the coolest geek ever!  I learned to read it and laughed like a know it all whenever I showed it to someone who misread the time.  (I was a little haughty in high school.)

I kept the watch all through high school and through most of college.  I replaced multiple batteries and kept it running until I had worn clean through two wrist bands and decided it was time to put Goofy away.  Unfortunately,  I could no longer tell time on a regular watch so I gave up wearing watches and have not worn one since.

My adult brand of cool nerdiness focuses around the clock pictured above.  I bought it a few years ago at Think Geek. It’s a binary clock which takes a special brand of determination and fascination to read.  I have had it sitting on my desk for a couple of years now.

The running joke was that any guy who came into my office, saw the clock and immediately knew (a) what it was or (b) how to read it was automatically getting laid.  Only one guy knew a and figured out b within a couple hours.

He is now my finance.
